Take Heart!

In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

(John 16:33)

We certainly have trouble in this world, don’t we? We had trouble enough before coronavirus came along, what with persecution and pollution, conflict and corruption, human trafficking and humanitarian disasters, but now it’s gone to another level. 2020 feels like it’s had several decades’ worth of trouble concentrated down into just a few months.

But we shouldn’t be surprised. Jesus told us this would happen. Jesus doesn’t cause the trouble, but he knew about it in advance, and He’s working through it to bring about good. And He left this message to reassure us when trouble does come. Forewarned is forearmed.

Despite all the trouble, we have reasons for courage and reasons for confidence. We can face this trouble because Jesus empowers us to do so. We can take courage knowing that Jesus has already won the war. There may be fighting and hardship to come before it’s all over, but the outcome is certain. Jesus has overcome the world.

Take heart, He says. That’s what He says to you this morning. You have to take it, no one will do it for you. We have to choose hope and choose faith in times like these. We have to choose them even when we’re tired and we don’t feel like it. We have to believe in ultimate salvation and final victory even if the end isn’t yet in sight.

Faith doesn’t make life easier, it makes you stronger. Choose faith today. Not because it’s a passport to an easy life, but because it will empower you to overcome everything that comes your way. Take heart – we’re on the winning side.
